Phonological Evolution of Modern Fask from Proto-IndoEuropean
Pre-Proto-Fask
Allophonic colouring of /e/ adjacent to laryngeal consonants:
- /h₂e/ → /h₂a/ — *h₂énti "in front" → *h₂ánti
- /eh₂/ → /ah₂/ — *meh₂tḗr "mother" → *mah₂tḗr
- /h₃e/ → /h₃o/ — *h₃érō "eagle" → *h₃órō
- /eh₃/ → /oh₃/ — *bʰléh₃mō "flower" → *bʰlóh₃mō
Merging of PIE "palatovelar" and "velar" plosives ("centumisation"):
- /ḱ/ → /k/ — *ḱm̥tóm "hundred" → *km̥tóm
- /ǵ/ → /g/ — *wérǵom "work" → *wérgom
- /ǵʰ/ → /gʰ/ — *ǵʰh₁yéti "to go, walk" → *gʰh₁yéti
Epenthesis of /a/ before syllabic sonorant followed by laryngeal and sonorant:
Loss of laryngeals, phonemicising the allophones of /e/:
- Word-initial laryngeals are lost before a consonant — *h₁dóntm̥ 'tooth, acc.' → *dóntum
- Laryngeals are lost before vowels — *h₁ésti "is" → *ésti
- Laryngeals are lost after vowels but lengthen the preceding vowel: /VH/ > /Vː/ — *séh₁mō "seeds" → *sēmō
- Two vowels that come to stand in hiatus because of that change contract into an long vowel — *-oHom "genitive plural" → *-ōm; *-eh₂es "eh₂-stem nom. pl." > *-ās
An epenthetic /s/ was inserted already in PIE after dental consonants when they were followed by a suffix beginning with a dental.
- This sequence now becomes /TsT/ > /ts/ > /ss/ — *wid-tós "known" (pronounced *widstos) → *witstós → *wissós
Labiovelars are delabialised before /t/:
- /kʷ/ → /k/ — *nókʷts "night" → *nókts
Early Proto-Fask
Labialisation of velars following /w/:
- /kw/ → /kʷ/ —
- /gw/ → /gʷ/ —
- /gʰw/ → /gʷʰ/ —
- /gʷ/ → /b/ —
Merging of PIE aspirated and voiced plosives (deaspiration):
- /bʰ/ → /b/ / —
- /dʰ/ → /d/ —
- /gʰ/ → /g/ —
- /gʷʰ/ → /gʷ/ —
Epenthesis of /i/ after syllabic liquids followed by a plosive:
- l̥T → liT
- r̥T → riT
Epenthesis of /a/ before the remaining syllabic resonants:
- m̥ → am
- n̥ → a
- l̥ → al
- r̥ → ar
Loss of all remaining nonsyllabic laryngeals.
Late Proto-Fask
Lenition of /p/ before liquids (pL → bL):
- /pl/ → /bl/ —
- /pr/ → /br/ —
Monophthongisation of /ey/ → /ē/.
- /ey/ → /ē/ —
Lowering of /uwa/ → /owa/.
- /uwa/ → /owa/ —
Raising of /ō/ → /ā/.
- /ō/ → /ā/ —
Approximation of /p/ before nasals:
- /pn/ → /wn/ — *supnós "sleep" → *sounos
- /pn/ → /wn/ — *kh₂pnós "haven, refuge" → *kawnos
Lowering of /ew/ → /ow/.
- /ew/ → /ow/ —
